Overview
Zakynthos, the most southerly of the Ionian Islands, lies just ten miles off the coast of the Peloponnese. The Venetians loved Zakynthos for its charm and natural beauty, calling it the ‘fiore di levante’ (flower of the east). On its semi-circular bay they built a splendid city, which unfortunately was razed to the ground in the earthquake of 1953. What remains are the castle walls, and the church of St. Dionysios, the island’s patron saint, alongside the vast culture within the island’s museums, music societies and beautifully restored historic monuments. The disaster did nothing to diminish the charm of the landscape, mountainsides and hills covered in fresh smelling herbs, valleys planted with vineyards, wizened olive trees and almond groves. In early spring the fields are vibrant with wild flowers, poppies, daisies and anemones. Its white sandy beaches are framed by a turquoise sea. Zakynthos is a joy to the senses, where the sound of the ebb and flow of the crystal-clear water will soothe all your cares away.
